"Good against cancer"
The EPO published three new case studies in May 2023 to provide examples for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), researchers and entrepreneurs of the significant benefits patent rights can have in terms of technology commercialization. The studies feature spin-outs and start-ups that have developed innovative technologies for cancer diagnosis and/or treatment.
The first case study is about Damae Medical, a spin-out from the French Institut d'Optique Graduate School. Using patented imaging technology, the company has developed a new medical device for real-time diagnosis of melanoma (suspected skin cancer), which provides a non-invasive method to detect malignant tumors at an early stage.
The second case study involves a collaboration between two professors from Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. The collaboration developed a new multiparameter prognostic test for early breast cancer that can reliably identify the best treatment options and reduce unnecessary chemotherapy treatments.
The third case study involves two scientists who developed a technology platform, S-TIR, for immunological vaccines that enable the treatment of allergies and cancer.
In all three case studies, IP rights proved essential to technological and commercial success.
