Press release on decisions J 8/20 and J 9/20 of the Board of Legal Appeal

In a public hearing, the Board of Legal Appeal confirmed that under the European Patent Convention (EPC) an inventor named in a patent application must be a human being. The board dismissed the applicant's appeal. A program or so-called "artificial intelligence" cannot therefore act as an applicant in a patent application.
